Excerpt from The holding stones, September 2025-ongoing
(Do I mark the project date with the year the collection-obsession began because if so, then that was last summer, the summer of 2024, June probably or July probably or maybe even August. But then again maybe not because my mom recently found an old Caboodle case of mine filled with precious childhood things and inside were two stones with lines on them and so maybe it’s not 2024 or 2025. Maybe it’s really something like 1994 or 1995.)
“For nothing is fixed, forever and forever and forever, it is not fixed; the earth is always shifting, the light is always changing, the sea does not cease to grind down rock. Generations do not cease to be born, and we are responsible to them because we are the only witnesses they have. The sea rises, the light fails, lovers cling to each other, and children cling to us. The moment we cease to hold each other, the moment we break faith with one another, the sea engulfs us and the light goes out.” — James Baldwin, 1964
